UNILAG produces first graduate with 5.0 CGPA

The University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, will on Monday graduate a student who has been graded ‘excellent’ in all the courses taken while on campus. 

The student, Ayodele Daniel Dada finished from the Department of Psychology with 5.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average,CGPA. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello, disclosed this yesterday, during a pre-convocation media briefing held at the university’s Senate Chamber disclosed this to newsmen. According to the VC, the university was glad to break another academic ground, saying the candidate showed exceptional academic prowess. He said that this means Ayodele scored As in all courses he took in the programme. 

According to him, a total of 10,907 students will graduate with degrees and diplomas  during the convocation slated for 1st to 3rd of March, 2016. In the breakdown, he noted that 5472 students will be awarded with first degree certificates, while 5435 will receive postgraduate degrees. He said: “Out of the first degree graduating students, a total of 178 passed in the first class division, while 1,617 passed in the second class upper division. “Also, 2,496 are in second class lower degree, 884 in third class, 274 in unclassified degrees in Medical Sciences and Pharmacy, just as 50 students had pass degree. Besides , the University will graduate a total of 71 students with the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in various disciplines.” According to the Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Engineering tops with the highest number of first class degrees, having 41 first class graduating students. The convocation programmes, which has formally kicked off with the media briefing will also feature a convocation lecture to be delivered by the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu on Monday, February 28.

The National Association of Kwara State Student NAKSS, National headquarters inaugurates new executives and Senate council into office on Thursday 3rd March 2016 in Ilorin.

The event which was organized with the theme ‘An Echoes of Change, the role of the youth’ had turn out of personalities and students of various institutions in attendance.

In a speech, the presiding Judge and legal adviser Barrister Teju admonished the newly executive to be diligent in the discharge of their duties. Adding that, the position should be seen as Service to humanity and for the greatness of the Association. He however swore in the executives and the Senate Leadership.

The chairperson of the occasion Hajia Amina Ahmed, the Hon Commissioner Ministry of Territory Institution represented by Mrs. M.A Ajayi congratulated the newly inaugurated executive and furthered by expatiating  on the theme. She said all student should be well developed in their field of study so as to be able to fulfill their ambition. “You pass through the university and as well allow the university to pass through you” she added.

Earlier during the event, the lecture was delivered by Comrade Titilope Anifowoshe, a 500 level Student from the University of Ilorin. She encouraged the youth to be ambassadors of good behaviour. Adding that, the good behaviour will encourage a useful vision.

In his inaugural Speech, The President Comrade Afis Oyedepo appreciated all the students for their support.  He revealed that the Association is facing some enormous challenges which he said are serious and will not be meant easily or in a short span of time. The president, however enjoin all, to choose hope over fear and unity of purpose over conflict and discord. 
Meanwhile, He reiterate his promise to ensure students welfarism remain his administrations topmost priority,  reconstruction of the unions’ Constitution, Agitation for the prompt payment of Bursary and Scholarship and inclusion of students in governance.
He concluded by admonishing the students to be good ambassadors of Kwara State.

The elected executives sworn in are Oyedapo Abdulafis- President, Kamal Dosunmu- vice president (administrative), Raheem Aishat Morenike- Vice president  (special duty) Yusuf Mohammed –Director general , yusuf Ismail –Auditor General , salaudeen  Salam Erubu-Treasurer, Olayioye  Adedayo- Weifare director yusuf therudeen- Deputy Director general, Ishau Zainab –social Directoress, Olarenwaju Azeez-social Director ,Usman Yusuf – PRO 1, Mahmnd Ridwan-PRO 2, Akande Hakeen-sport. Director.

While the senate council officials inaugurated are Mohammed Nurudeen as Senate President, Adetoro Modinat-Deputy Senate President, Adegboye Abubakar- Senate Clerk and Abdullahi Ibrahim as Chief Whip.

Meanwhile, a Certificate of Patronship was presented by the President to a newly nominated patron of the Association, Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki. Some students were also appointed into key offices. Among whom are: Comrade Abdulrasheed as Chief of Staff, Comrade Anifowoshe Titilayo as Director of Media and Publicity and Comr. Azeez Jaji as Director of Planning and Strategy

The event was later concluded with entertainment from various Artists such as Emelly from National Open University of Nigeria, K B dancers and host of others.

The NOUN Student Development Forum (NSDF) of National Open University of Nigeria, Ilorin study centre  have recently reveal plans to launch a free internet service for all students in the  center. 

Speaking with NOUN News Update the President Sen. Ishola Hassan said that his administration is bet on ensuring a purposeful development in the center. Adding that, through the University is not in support of Unionism, the forum has been allowed for reasons of matured conduct among the student and for Academic Excellence. “The free internet Access is one of our major projects in this Administration. The equipments had already been purchased and the installation is in progress. In few weeks from now students will have access to the internet services free”. 

He also reaffirms his dedication and loyality to the students that participated in his election into office.” I will ensure students benefit from this  leadership and judicious use of the forums available resources”.
 Meanwhile, Speaking our correspondent, the students applauded the center and the student forum for the innovation.  A student of Political Science Adeife said ‘This is a welcome development and its coming at the best time, the free internet access within the centre will help us resolve the  problems we face in submitting our TMA and doing other online activities, such as using the I Learn platform. Isaac idowu, A Mass Communication Student, “I can’t but appreciate the leadership of the student forum and most especially the center Director for this. I am proud of the Executives and Senate of the Forum, I just can’t wait to start browsing free, with this new innovation, I can do so many things without paying”. Hussein  Saheed, A law student ‘if this innovation come true as it is projected, then I know we and especially myself did not waste the vote casted that ushered  in this  present  Administration. We all brought them in through election and choose to fund them through developmental levy. So I don’t expect anything lesser.

However, students have been enjoined to continue to be hardworking, prayerful and cooperate with the present leadership for the desired development to come through. Ishola, however promised the student of positive change and development before the end of his Administration.

Our correspondents who went to the site, confirmed that the router that will ensure the connectivity of the internet is been installed.

NOUN: New VC, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu Assumes Duty

THE newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, has assumed duty, a statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s spokesperson, Dr Ronke Ogunmakin, has said.
While taking over the mantle of leadership from his predecessor, Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe, at the headquarters of the university in Lagos, Adamu said his vision for NOUN “revolves around VERB” and went on to define the acronym as “Vibrant, Energetic, Re-armed and Ballistic”. According to the statement, the new Vice Chancellor’s goal is to “take education to the door step of every Nigerian, while ensuring the sustenance of the core values of accessibility, affordability and flexible learning for which NOUN is reputed.”
Adamu also pledged “to consolidate and even surpass the legacy of his predecessor.” The statement noted further that the new Vice Chancellor “hails from one of the royal houses in Kano State and holds a double professorship in
Science Education (1997) and Media and Cultural Communication (2012) from Bayero University Kano, where he was a lecturer until his appointment as Vice Chancellor.”

 NOUN: Students to Hold National Conference

The Independent Students' body known as Congress of NOUN Students (CONS) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has set to hold National Conference towards actualization of NYSC and Law School, as well as other critical issues in the University.
This was made known at the meeting held by the Representatives of all departments in Ilorin Study Centre on Wednesday.

However, not less than 34 Study Centres will be participating in the congress in Lagos.

The Departmental Presidents present at the meeting includes MACOSA President, Law President, PESCOSA President, ICTSAN President and so on.

The Impact of the Press cannot be Overemphasized-- MACOSA Ambassador
The MACOSA Ambassador, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Laro Yusuf has disclosed that the impact of the Press cannot be overemphasized.
He dropped the hint at the MACOSA Executives meeting held at NUJ Press Centre on Saturday.
Abdulrasaq, who is also the Station Manager, Kwara State Television (KWTV), Lafiagi, told the MACOSA Executives that they can make a change at the top and also correct the mistakes made by the management of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
He, however, advised the executives to make a courtesy call to Lagos Centre to let the Vice-Chancellor feel the problem the students are facing.
In his comments, Ambassador Raphael Ogbonnaiye, also enjoined the MACOSA to find a way of penetrating into the midst of students from other Study Centres and wake them from their slumber.
Kudos were also given to the Executives for keeping the students together under one umbrella.

MACOSA: News Room Officially Approved, President Sets to Purchase Equipments.
The proposed News Room and Studio of the Mass Communication Students' Association (MACOSA) has finally been approved by the Centre Director, Mr. Michael Abikoye.
This was made known by the President of the department, Hon. Daniel Ayantoye at the Executive Retreat Meeting held at the NUJ press Centre on Saturday.
"The Centre Director has officially approved the office for our News Room and the Studio." He reiterated.
The President has, however, set to make a journey to Lagos for the purchase of necessary equipments to the News Room and the Studio on Friday 22nd May.
Nevertheless, the MACOSITES wished him safe journey.
